  • A balanced view of kids and technology. How tech can support executive function, connection, planning, creativity, and learning — while also creating distraction, comparison, and overwhelm.
  • Understanding what kids actually do online. How parents can get curious about YouTube, Discord, gaming, and social media so they can better understand kids’ interests and connect those interests to real-world skills.

Workshop 2: Learn Sane Conversation Starters About Tech

  • Privacy and consent online. What parents share about kids — photos, stories, diagnoses, struggles, and accomplishments — and why kids need a say before their life is posted.
  • Surveillance, tracking, and trust. How grade apps, behavior apps, location tracking, and reading texts can create overwhelm or mistrust, and when safety concerns may change the equation.
  • Misinformation and fact-checking. Why kids need help spotting unreliable information from search, social media, and AI, and why AI should not be treated as the final source of truth.

BIO

Tech advice for parents that’s realistic, actionable, and non-judgemental:
I’m Devorah Heitner, author and speaker. My keynotes and workshops offer practical, timely, non-judgmental advice about technology and parenting in the digital age. Schools and nonprofits consult with me about digital wellness policies and when the fit is right, I consult with app developers and tech companies to help design ethical products and messaging to kids.

My two books on parenting and technology are Growing up in Public: Coming Of Age In A Digital World and Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World. I earned a PhD in Media/Technology and Society from Northwestern University. You can find my writing on kids and technology in the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN Opinion, Fast Company and other places. I’m also the parent of a teenager.

I offer strategies for mentoring our kids in an always-connected world. With relatable stories and research-backed advice, my goal is to empower parents to cut through the overwhelm to connect with their kids, recognize how to support them, and help them figure out who they are when everyone is watching.

Getting this right sets young people up for a lifetime of success in a world where they’re likely to find a job, make friends, and pursue their interests in interactive, digital communities.
